Rick and Morty: The Story Circle structure
The story circle structure was created by Dan Harmon. According to the ReedsyBlog, this consists of:
1. A character is in a zone of comfort,
2. But they want something.
3. They enter an unfamiliar situation,
4. Adapt to it,
5. Get what they wanted,
6. Pay a heavy price for it,
7. Then return to their familiar situation,
8. Having changed.
This can be applied to a few episodes of Rick and Morty. I believe this structure was used since it shows a cynical view of a person's journey where we go from chaos to order, from conscious to unconscious etc. This befits the nature of Rick and Morty extremely well since the show uses a lot of dark humour and has dark themes tied to it.
